Designs and Modifications for Brushes of Carbon

A new term was highlighted in the world of electrical engineering - carbon brush - when the material that used to be of copper were substituted by graphite and carbon in the brush like appearance of the product. It has seen that these brushes have continuously developing with their application in almost every industry. As of now these are the irreplaceable hardware of the DC electrical machine.

Carbon Brushes can be divided into three main designs:

Solid, one-piece carbon brushes: These are the carbon brushes that are utilized on basic machines and are known as the simplest type. There is no major electrical or mechanical specification in it.

Fractional HP brushes: A spring is used to fill the carbon in the brush holder which also makes this design known as spring loaded. These can either be single or split depending on their application on the respective machine.

Split Carbon Brushes: As the name suggests split brushes are made with the help of two or more carbon sectors combining in one unit which results in optimal contact. They can also be applied depending on the respective machines which supports these.
